Dive Master Internship

At Tioman Dive Centre, we believe in quality training, environmental awareness and safety. These are our by-words, not just a slogan - ask our students and regular divers.

As part of this philosophy, we have decided to develop a new approach to training dive masters. This is not to say that there is anything wrong with the way it is done now, but this course will give you much more than you will get in the usual 2-4 week courses commonly offered.

This three month course has been designed specially for those people who have decided to make diving their career, or an important part of their lives as a hobby. It is intensive, detailed and rigorous - you won't just get to lead dives! Not only will you have superior dive leading skills, but you will also have hands on experience of all aspects of running a dive centre and it will prepare you for your Instructor Development Course (IDC). At the end of your internship we will provide you with a reference that will allow you to walk into a job as a dive master in any dive centre.

The course will cover the following topics

Advanced dive leading skills: not just your average dive leader, but how to give a comprehensive dive briefing, managing a group of people under water, navigation, post-dive de-briefs, counselling divers on technique, marine life identification and safety issues.

Teaching: all DM trainees have to work with an instructor to assist with students under training. But we will go one step further by involving you more in the teaching process. By the time you finish the course you will have a greater understanding of what makes a good instructor, first class skills and academic knowledge better than many instructors.

Boat handling: know how to "park" a boat? You should - and you will. Not just sitting up front driving in a straight line, but tips on how to handle a boat in confined areas, near jetties and beaches, manouevering near lines, safety of divers - on and off the boat while entering and exiting the water.

Compressor use: we all have to do it, but can you do it safely and efficiently? Learn how to plan tank requirements, filling times, safe compressor operation and daily safety checks.

Equipment maintenance: living on a small island, we don't have easy access to equipment retailers, so we have to do our own maintenance. We will teach you how to strip down and service regulators, BCDs and tank valves - useful skills in any dive centre.

Successful candidates will be certified as DSD Dive Masters. This means you will be certified to independently conduct discover scuba dives for non-divers, giving you the opportunity to continue to work with new divers introducing them to the underwater world. This is an excellent opportunity to develop your teaching skills and is great experience for your IDC.

These internships will be limited to only six candidates per year. You should be a certified rescue diver with a minimum of 40 dives. By the end of your training, you will have over 100 logged dives - enough for the IDC.

The duration of the internships offered will be three months. The cost of the internship is RM 2,600.
This includes:

unlimited dives for your training
unlimited access to instructors, dive centre facilities, training and other materials
use of any equipment you do not have
dive master manual and candidate work book

Accommodation is not included, but we can help you to arrange low cost accommodation near the dive centre.
